Woman laughing with kids climbing on her back on a sofa. Cozy living room, patterned pillows, and a landscape painting in the background.

When most people think about doing a family photoshoot, the image is usually the same:golden hour, somewhere outdoors, everyone smiling perfectly, hair behaving, kids cooperating.

And listen — those photos are gorgeous. Truly. But also… that’s not the only way to capture meaningful family photos.

What if we did something a little different? A little more real. A little more “this actually feels like us.”

That’s where in-home photoshoot ideas come in.

Three people baking, one holding a rolling pin. Flour-covered table, wooden board. Blue kitchen cabinets, cozy atmosphere.

A Baking Photoshoot with Stephanie and Her Family

That’s exactly what we did with Stephanie and her family.

This was a fully in-home session, but we added a fun twist — we turned it into a baking photoshoot. They decided to bake an apple pie together, and I got to document the whole thing as it naturally unfolded.

No one was worried about “what do I do with my hands?” because they were already busy doing something they love.

Letting the Session Breathe (a.k.a. No One Was Rushed)

While the apple pie baked, we slowed things down even more.

We captured candid moments in the living room — the kind that happen when kids aren’t being asked to smile on cue. Then we stepped outside for a few relaxed outdoor moments once everyone was fully warmed up.

Woman and two children holding hands and running on lush green grass. Background features bushes and trees. All smiling, creating a joyful scene.

This is one of my favorite parts about untimed, in-home sessions:there’s room for things to happen naturally… and room for kids to be kids.

In-Home Photoshoot Ideas That Actually Feel Like You

If you’re looking for unique in-home photoshoot ideas, baking together is just one option — and it definitely doesn’t have to be apple pie.

It could be:

  • Cooking a family recipe

  • Making pancakes on a slow morning

  • Playing a board game

  • Reading together on the couch

  • Honestly… even folding laundry if that’s your thing (no judgment)

The activity doesn’t need to be something complex…It just needs to mean something to you.

Child pressing dough on floured table, wearing dotted dress. Spoon, glass nearby. Cozy kitchen setting, black and white.

If you’ve been thinking, “Okay… this actually sounds kind of fun,” let’s make it happen.I’m always happy to help you come up with an in-home photoshoot idea that fits your family (and your energy).
