What is a Mompreneur?

Updated: Apr 12

Ever daydreamed about saying, "When I grow up, I want to be a mom!"? Well, for me, my childhood ambitions leaned more towards conquering epic "bad bitch" goals and simply "being somebody." Picture this: growing up in a household with your typical "immigrant parents" and a tiger mom who had a knack for insisting I wasn't quite up to snuff. But you know what? That lit a fire under my behind, propelling me towards dreams of becoming an artist, a hairstylist, a fashion designer, an illustrator—basically, an all-around creative force. Hence the reason for my “jack of all trades” skillset.

I craved that sweet satisfaction of sprinkling a bit helping others with my creativity into the world. Plus, I had this wild notion of proving to my mom that I could be a big deal, measured in part by the amount of cash I'd be raking in. Spoiler alert: The dream never involved being a stay-at-home mom.

Now, let's unravel the mystery of the "mompreneur." Is it just a mashup of mom and entrepreneur?

Well, not exactly. To me, it's the magical balancing act of being the primary caregiver with a full-time job while simultaneously building a community-serving business. And guess what? Amidst all that, I'm whipping up family feasts (and crafting some Insta-worthy memory trips!) while leaving a lasting legacy for my community. I truly find fulfillment doing this.

At the end of it all, I get to be the mom who's actually present in their lives. It's like having the best of both worlds—I can be a local thought leader while creating picture-perfect memories for others. This, my friends, is the "baddie creative" job I've been chasing all along.

Momprenuer story time!

The turning point for me was when my eldest daughter was in her first year of volleyball, becoming captain and clinching the championship in her first year. Guess who missed every single game that season? Yours truly. I did not think much of it, but one day she cried and expressed that neither of her parents came to any of her games. Fast forward a month, and I'd had it with my boss. I handed in my two weeks' notice, bid farewell to the 9-to-5 grind, and dove headfirst into the wild world of entrepreneurship. Now here we are.

It took me a hot minute to wrap my head around the idea that being a mompreneur is the ultimate "baddie" move. Juggling mommy duties while hustling to build my own empire? Now that's a winning combo. Initially, I grappled with this realization for various reasons, especially considering my eclectic career history. But when I looked back, I realized, "Did I really go through all those twists and turns just to be a stay-at-home mom?" Nope, not on my watch! Everything had a rhyme and reason. I now use all my artistic and design skills to really strengthen my own business. This is what mompreneurship means to me!
