bottles of make up

Family photoshoots are exciting, but they can also be a bit stressful, especially  when it comes to looking your best. Don't worry! I'm here to guide you through your makeup options, ensuring you look and feel fantastic for your upcoming family pictures. Remember, you're already perfect just as you are – we're just here to enhance your natural beauty and feel incredible the day of!

Option 1: Hire a Professional Makeup Artist

The easiest way to make sure you look and feel confident is to hire a professional makeup artist. They have the skills, experience, and products to make you look amazing in photos. Plus, it takes the pressure off you on the day of the shoot, allowing you to relax from the everyday chaos of…having a family. Let’s be frank, when we think about hiring to do your make up we think it is going to cost oodles of dollars.

Well let me bust this myth for you, there are plenty of options out there including going to Sephora, just to do the eye look even. (Pro tip: oftentimes salons are running behind so budget in cushion time for this, start makeup and hair 3 hours before the shoot..don’t forget to calculate travel time.

If you don’t want to worry about being late (trust me this happens A LOT!) and want that peace of mind just have somebody come to you! Check Michelle Montes out. She has worked with many of my families before sessions and they always leave her hands feeling fabulous! Check this blog with Michelle!

Fun Fact: One of my mama’s got the sweetest compliment when hubs saw her after Michelle was done with her make up and hair. Below are the photos from this sweet family session.

Option 2: Learn from a Pro

If you're interested in doing the DIY route, let's consider making it last. Consider hiring a makeup artist to teach you. This option offers several benefits:

make up lesson

  1. Makeup Lessons! Find a skilled makeup artist in your area. Michelle (she offers her lessons in different packages, and also online options. They can teach you techniques specifically for photoshoots and everyday looks.

  2. Practice Makes Perfect! With guidance from your instructor, you can practice your new skills before the photoshoot. This helps build your confidence and ensures you're ready for the big day.

It’s actually a good skill to have! Learning proper makeup techniques is a skill you can use daily, not just for special occasions. It's a great way to invest in yourself and boost your confidence. Check out this blog on Luyba’s journey in learning foundational makeup looks!

Option 3: Do It Yourself

Okay, I get it. Sometimes you just don’t have the time or budget for doing the options above, and trust me I have been there. This is why I pulled from my previous experiences as a cosmetologist and in collaboration with Michelle Montes to give you some guidance here. I wanted to give this to you because in reality, the more confident you feel before and during your photoshoot, the better your photoshoot will go. As a result? You will just love your photos just that much more! So here is an easy to follow step by step guide.

Step 1: Give Yourself Time Do practice the look you have planned a few times before the day of the shoot so you aren't stressed out on the day. Carve out some uninterrupted time for yourself. Find a moment away from distractions and create a calm space where you can focus. A place with plenty of light, if possible natural light.

Step 2: Skin Prep Start with a clean face and apply a base layer of moisturizer. Many modern primers are all-in-one solutions. Here are some of my favorite primers and moisturizers:

  • La Roche Posay Toleraine Double Repair Moisturizer

  • Good Molecules Light weight Daily Moisturizer

  • Naturium Multi Peptide Moisturizer

  • First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream

Step 3: Foundation/ConcealerAssess if you really need foundation. Many of my clients skip it and look amazing. You can try a CC cream for an even complexion or use concealer for specific areas. Or just use a concealer under the eyes, around the nose and anywhere you have darkness

My favorites include:

  • Colourpop Light 45 W Hyaluronic Hydrating Foundation

  • NYX Total Control Pro Drop Foundation

  • Fenty Beauty Eaze Drops

  • L'Oreal Paris True Match Nude Hyaluronic Tinted Serum

  • Elf  Soft Glam Foundation

  • Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted

  • Elf Hydrating Camo Concealer Moisturizer

  • Kosas Revealer Concealer

  • Nyx Pro fix stick

Step 4: Blush Go a little heavier with blush for photos. Smile, find the apples of your cheeks, and sweep upwards toward your temples for a lifted look. Blush helps the skin look alive in pictures. These blushes work for almost all skin tones:

  • Tarte Clay Play To-Go Cheek Palette

  • Wet n Wild MegaGlo Illuminating Blush Makeup Powder Palette

  • Nudestix

  • Nars

Nudestix

Step 5: Eyes Keep it simple. If you don’t usually wear eyeshadow, skip it. Or use eyeshadow sticks (you can draw them on like crayons on the eyes). DIY lashes like Lilac St or Lashify can look great and are easier than you might think. If not, a touch of waterproof mascara works wonders:

  • Sky High Mascara

  • L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara

  • Lancome Hypnose Mascara

  • Lilac St

Step 6: Brows Stick to your usual routine, maybe a tad darker on the arch and the tail of the brow. If brows intimidate you, try a tinted brow gel,  this subtle products to tame and shape:

  • Benefit Gimme Brow Volumizing Gel

Step 7: Lips You can simply use chapstick! For a bit more, a tinted lip gloss looks natural and beautiful. Some of my favorites are:

  • Clinique Chubby Stick

  • Clinique Almost Lipstick

  • Nyx Fat Lip Oil Slick Click
