Things you should know before your maternity studio photoshoot.

Updated: Jun 18, 2023

Preparing for a maternity studio session can be both exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. Here are some tips to help you feel confident and ready for your photoshoot.

Schedule your session at the right time: The ideal time for a maternity studio session is between 30-32 weeks. At this point, your bump is prominent (and frankly so cute!) enough to be captured beautifully in photos, and you are still comfortable enough to move around and to get creative.

Discuss your outfit choices with your photographer: Talk to your photographer about the type of outfits that would work best for the session. Solid colors tend to work well, but you can also choose prints and textures that complement your style. Make sure you feel comfortable and confident in whatever you choose to wear.

Pay attention to your makeup and hair: Your makeup and hair can make a huge difference in how you look and feel in your photos. Use black lash glue if you do wear false lashes, as if there are any white residue cameras these days pick up details (camera has come along way now!). Avoid using foundation with sunscreen as it can cause flashback in photos. Apply your makeup a bit heavier than usual to ensure it shows up in the final images. If you are not comfortable doing them yourself, consider going to a professional makeup artist and hairstylist to help you achieve the look you want. You do not have to pay $$, a great budget friendly place is to get in with Sephora. (Tip - schedule ahead of time and schedule for a time way ahead incase they are running behind).

Keep your lips hydrated: Chapped lips can be distracting in photos, so make sure to keep them hydrated by using lip balm leading up to the session. Also keep your nails clean: if you are not a polish type of gal, just make sure they are clean, once you see these in photos it is just hard to unsee them!

Bring props you'd like to use: You can bring ultrasound pictures, baby shoes, or any other props that are meaningful to you. Discuss with your photographer what props they have available and what would work well with your vision.

Communicate with your photographer: Make sure to discuss your vision for the session with your photographer beforehand. Share any specific poses or ideas you have in mind, and be open to their suggestions as well.

Be prepared before you get to the session (except the change of clothes): You want to optimize your time with the photographer for shooting time. If you come in with the intend of ironing your clothes at the studio you are taking time away from YOUR shooting time.

Relax and have fun: Remember that this is a special time in your life, and the photoshoot is an opportunity to capture those memories forever. So, relax, have fun, and enjoy the experience!
